Derived from a Tamil word"otak kalmandu" it means village resides on hill areas.

It is a hill station of Tamil Nadu and it is also famous for its chai and chocolate.

It's beauty hidden on its beautiful valleys and it has been named as" queen of hill station" by then PM of India"Pandit jawaharlal Nehru".

We feel it's beauty from inside when we move forward to nilgiri mountain letting  back the disturbance of coimbatore. Trees of coconut across the road looks as such an artist's imagination has been interpreted.

John sullivan's invention...

In years 1817, now then collector of Coimbatore "John sullivan" discovered it. He got attracted by it's romantic valleys and the how natural it is!

In year 1819, he decided to make roads through its unsurmountable paths. He takes 1100 INR from Coimbatore revenue board to start it. After 2 years of hard work, the road became ready for use. In year 1938, this is the only road which connects Coimbatore to manoram ranges of nilgiri mountain.

After that, then governor"S.R. lushington" made कुन्नूर घाटी रोड।

It's incomparable beauty of nature diffused on nilgiri mountain has a great importance.

It has been said when Britishers get through,they found themselves having the rules of "Toda tribes".

In year 1899, nilgiri mountain railway station has been made by sanctioning 25 lakh rupees.

If you have free time,then take the pleasure of visiting by this train.

This train runs twice in a day. In morning, first train starts from 7'o clock and get there at 10'o clock while second train starts from 12'o clock and get you metupalayam.

From ooty to kunnur this train runs on diesel engine and after that steam engine has to be connected. Owing to this reason, in year 2005, UNESCO had rewarded nilgiri railways a world heritage site......
